We welcome short fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction that engages with fantasy in its broadest sense. Write of places that never were, histories that diverged, or futures shaped by imagination.

Theme: Dark Ages

We seek work inspired by collapse, decline, uncertainty, isolation, survival, forgotten places, or the struggle to find light in difficult times. Historical, contemporary, speculative, and personal interpretations are all welcome. Surprise us.

Guidelines

General requirements

  • You must be 18 years or older to submit work
  • No cover letter needed
  • Paste your text into the body of the email or attach the file(s)
  • Simultaneous submissions are welcome-please notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere
  • We don't need résumés or CVs. We care about the work itself
  • Response time is typically 1–2 weeks
  • We are unable to pay for submissions at this time. There are no fees for submission

Microfiction and flash prose

  • Up to 1,000 words
  • Prose should be fantasy-related

Poetry

  • Up to 5 poems per submission
  • Each poem should be no more than 2 pages, single-spaced
  • If you plan to send more than five poems or multiple batches at once, please drop us a quick note before submitting

Visual art

  • Up to 3 pieces as .png, .jpg, or .pdf attachments
  • Ensure that each work is titled
  • Include up to 125 words describing the piece
  • Submissions should consist of the artwork only; OTR branding, logo, and text will be added by the editorial team
  • One submission per artist
  • Artwork must be submitted in a vertical format matching standard US letter proportions (8.5 × 11.5 inches)
  • Final files should be 2550 × 3450 pixels or larger, RGB color space, submitted as PNG or JPG

What we don't accept

  • Submissions involving erotica, hate speech, or gore
  • Previously published work
  • Work currently under consideration elsewhere (except for simultaneous submissions with proper notice)

Rights

All work published in The Orichalcum Tower Review remains the property of its creator. By accepting publication, contributors grant first publication rights and non-exclusive serial rights to the magazine. Following publication, all rights revert fully to the contributor.
